How To Make A Sand Terrarium

Remember when everyone thought terrariums were just a fad making a comeback? With so many amazing containers and varied ways to create them, terrariums are standing the test of time. Today I’ll show you another fun way we’ve come up with for creating terrariums - layering sand.

Layering sand really goes beautifully with the transparcy of glass as you can see in this example. Creating this effect is easy and a great way to show your creativity.

Above are items and tools to help you with making your sand terrarium.

  • Chopstick to help you place plants and accessories.
  • Paint brush to brush away dirt from plants.
  • Pieces of driftwood and moss to decorate.

You will also need:

  • Colored sand in whatever colors float your boat.
  • Scooper for adding dirt and rocks.
  • Cactus soil.
  • Small rocks.

And of course you will need succulents. It's good to get a few choices to give you ideas but you won't be able to put as many succulents into a terrarium as you can into a regular container.

Rocks and crystals can be beautiful additions to the terrarium as well.

First you want to lay down your base color.

Then start adding your "drift" colors. As the name implies, you want to pile the colors around the edges in little drifts.

Keep going until you've created something that makes you happy. Love how it looks like there's a black mustache now.

Add a layer of small pebbles to keep the sand in place and help with drainage.

Add your cactus mix. Create a divot in the center to place your plants.

Now you want to decide on your plants. Pull it from it's nursery pot and shake off the extra soil to help you fit it into the terrarium.

Place the plants in the center. Add a little more soil if necessary to cover the roots.

Add another layer of pebbles to finish the top.

Now it's time to add your bling...larger rocks, crystals, driftwood, moss, weird things you find when you're walking on the beach. You get the idea...whatever you want.
